Finding a right Los Angeles moving company is as important to moving to LA as is choosing the neighborhood and communities to live in, as bad Los Angeles movers will sour your experience of moving to this dream city and LA is full of such companies. Got it, but why to move to LA?

Why LA is so famous

LA is so famous among people because of its entertainment industry, of which Hollywood is a big part. Television, recorded music, and interactive games may not be individually as big as Hollywood, but regardless each one of them entertains its audiences driving the LA economy in the process. Talking of economy I should mention here that apparel, fashion, tourism, technology, aerospace, and petroleum are other economic forces that move the company.

Cultural centers of LA

It will not be too much to say that Los Angeles is the cultural center of the world. It has many world-famous movie theaters, concert halls, amphitheaters, entertainment centers, etc., which makes living in LA quite fun. I am going to talk in very brief about four very famous cultural centers that will make your life joyous once you move to the city.

Hollywood Bowl: It is famous modern amphitheatre located in the vicinity of Hollywood. It is used primarily for music concerts. The amphitheater has a seating capacity of 17,376 people.

Grauman’s Chinese Theatre: It’s a movie theater. A movie theater with a difference. It is located near the historic Hollywood walk of fame at 6925 Hollywood Boulevard. It is opened after the success of Grauman’s Egyptian Theater.

Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre: Located in Hollywood Boulevard, this is the world’s most famous movie theater. It was opened in 1922, and has an honor of becoming the movie theater that hosted the first ever Hollywood premiere.

Walt Disney Concert Hall: The Walk Disney Concert Hall is located at 111 South Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles. It has a seating capacity of 2,265 people. This place could be considered home to the Los Angeles Master Chorale and Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra. These are just some of the in-numerous reasons why so many people want to live in LA. This is a place where an outgoing mobile person will never get bored. Now, let’s see how you can find a decent relocation company to shift you to the City of Angels.

Choosing the right Los Angeles Moving Company

Step 1: Ask for recommendation. If you know someone in LA, or someone who has moved to LA in the recent past then ask the person if he knows any decent moving company in the neighborhood. Following the recommendation, make a list of moving companies.

Step 2: Contact the relocation guys. Call the Los Angeles movers on the list that you made by asking for relocation. If you are satisfied by one or more of them then your initial choosing is done, but if you are not then move to step 3.

Step 3: Research online. Go to relocation forums, read blogs and ask questions, read reviews, and ask an online expert; do each one of these things and make a list of top 5 relocation companies, and repeat step 2 before moving to step 4.

Step 4: Check papers and ask for quotation. Checking various licenses of all the LA movers you talked is very important because you cannot do much to a company that runs illegally. If any document or license is missing then just bid adieu. You need to keep yourself safe from scamming companies. Once you are satisfied, ask them to give quotations

Step 5: Schedule the moving and get it in written. If you are satisfied by the papers shown to you and rate offered. It is time to fix the date and time. When everything is done to satisfaction, get it in written and properly signed. Call the moving company an hour in advance before scheduled time.

Each of the steps dealt above is important in choosing a reliable Los Angeles moving company. Do not hurry. You will not like to end up with a bad moving company that breaks your goods, and because of their legal status you cannot even do too much to them legally.

No matter in which part of Los Angeles (LA) you are going to move to, a good Los Angeles moving company will always be there to safely transport your goods as well as to pack and unpack them. A good moving company will always be there in LA, no matter how many bad LA movers mushrooms in the city.

How do you tell if the LA mover you are hiring is good or bad? It is simple to tell, if you know what to look for. There are some attributes that all good LA movers share and which are missing from bad ones. You need to look for the following attributes in a LA mover while discussing your requirement with him. This will save you from falling prey to scammers. I must warn you beforehand that LA moving scams are rising in LA neighborhood, so you need to be careful.

Things to look for in a LA mover

Are you being offered the unbelievably cheap deal? Well do not get surprised if I say this is one of the main indicators of a scammer. A LA moving scammer will offer you any deal that you asked for because he has to trap you, and as it is he is not going to honor the deal. Always remember there is a certain minimum price for everything, and anyone offering you a price lower than the minimum the industry is a scammer. Deal hunting is good, but it may lead you to the glossy door of moving swindlers.

Agreeing on anything. This is another sign of a scam moving company. The person on the other side of the table will invariably agree to whatever you say. He will try to win your confidence by agreeing to even your unreasonable demands, which by the way you don’t know are unreasonable. What is the harm in agreeing to everything, if there is no intention of working on any of them?

Bad reviews. If the Los Angeles moving company you are dealing with has loads of bad reviews littered on the Internet then beware, you are in for a trouble. Having said that I must tell you that you must apply your own sense of judgment and read between the lines of good as well as bad reviews written about an LA mover on the internet. People get paid to generate good or even bad reviews.

All this is so good, so insightful, and so telling, but where should I live in Los Angeles?

Well, this is a valid question, which you need to answer before you take any of the measures suggested above. If you do not know where to live in LA then how “which LA movers you choose” is not going to matter even a bit? So, let’s figure out that part as well.

The city of Angels, as LA is known as, is straggled in 498.3 square miles area, of which land encompasses 469.1 square miles, and the rest 29.2 square miles is water. The city is divided into several neighborhoods. They are: The Eastside, Downtown LA, Northeast LA, the Harbor Area, Hollywood, South LA (or South Central as called by the locals), the Westside and the San Fernando, Wilshire, and Crescenta Valleys.

You can choose to live in any part of the city, as each one of them is as exciting as you can expect it to be. If you want, you can ask permission to be part of any of the LA’s famous communities; of which Baldwin Hills, Bel Air, Benedict Canyon, Brentwood, Century City, Downtown Financial District, Hancock Park, Hollywood, Hollywood Hills, Koreatown, Leimert Park, Los Feliz, Pacific Palisades, Silver Lake, Venice Beach, Watts, Westwood, and West Adams are the most famous. Living in some of the above discussed communities is quite expensive, while, living in others goes easy on the pocket. And as usual, it all depends upon how deep your pocket it.

By coming this far, you have not only educated yourself about the City of Angels, but you have also learnt ways to pick out a reliable Los Angeles moving company from the ruck of not-so trustworthy LA movers.

Los Angeles or LA or the City of Angels, call what you may, but the charm of the city will not fade in the dark cloud oblivion. Everyone moving to the city knows that and so do Los Angeles movers. It is because of this pull of the city that so many Los Angeles Moving companies are mushrooming. Some of them are good and some of them are not so good, and the process of separating wheat (a right LA mover) from chaff (an agglomeration of crappy LA movers) is so daunting that it leaves most of gasping.

Well, after reading this article, it won’t be so.

Let’s begin to understand why more and more people are coming to the City of Angles, which on its own will explain the reason behind the surging demand for LA moving companies.

Why LA of all the cities?

In the United States, indeed, there are many more cities with all the world-class amenities, but none of them is LA. Yeah, it’s about Hollywood, but not only about Hollywood. LA has many more things to offer than that.

Colleges and university

The city has 3 public universities (California State University, Northridge [CSUN] and University of California, LA [UCLA], and California State University, LA [CSULA]), 21 private colleges, and 9 community colleges.

City transportation

LA’s subway system is the ninth busiest subway in the United States, and its light rail is the third busiest light rail system in the United States. Total combined ridership of bus lines, subway, and light rail across LA County is 1.7 million, which is handled remarkably well by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and various supporting agencies.

Crime and safety

In the last couple of years there has been a significant decline in crime rate in LA. Unlike early ’90s when LA was a hot favorite destination for crooks and criminals, crime has dropped in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, crime has reached 37-year low (recorded just 392 homicide), and in 2008, homicide rate dipped lower to reach 9.6 (per 100,000 population), which was 21.1 (per 100,000 population) in 1993.

Economy

Entertainment sector (movies, television, music, and games) is a major driver of the city’s economy. Other contributing sectors are petroleum, international trade, technology, aerospace, tourism, fashion, and apparel.

Finding a right LA moving company

Now you know why this City of Angels is so hot, it is time to talk about finding a right LA mover.

Search, research, and re-research

I have emphasized on research this much just to tell you how extremely important research is in the process of finding a relocation company for you. Moving to another city is not a small thing. You will have to move everything from knickers to sneakers, from books to goods, from carpets to computers, from DVDs to music system. And an unreliable relocation company will simply jeopardize your mental well-being by breaking things up, at least one. One breakage may cost you more than the time you need to invest in finding a right moving guy to relocate you to LA.

Inquire. No, grill!

By deciding to relocate to some other city, you are shifting your entire life with you, so will you take a chance in that? Put each and every relocation company through tough sessions of questioning about their prices, quality of their fleet, knowhow of the locality, responsiveness, security, insurance, and damage control, etc. Let them face the heat, so that you don’t during the process of relocation. Either of you has to. Let them be the one.

Get it written

Words come cheaper, and spoken words doubly so. Do not rely on the words. You are not there to make friends out of every LA movers. Be professional. Get everything in written and duly signed. This way you can take them to the court of law, if things don’t go as expected. These steps will filter out many fake and second-rate Los Angeles movers, and after this what remain will be the companies you would like to deal with. This is how I suggest you to choose a Los Angeles moving company.

Los Angeles is a great place to live in. The city offers everything that a person can ask for a better life: good homes, well-paying jobs, exciting nightlife, exotic cuisines, and exhilarating entertainment. This is the reason why so many people are moving to Los Angeles, which means mushrooming of Los Angeles Movers and paradox of choices.

On the face of it, all LA movers look good, but when inspected closely, the real picture comes out: not all the Los Angeles movers are cut to be the same; some are good while others are not. My goal is to help you find a better LA moving service provider, and for that I am going to share seven secrets of hiring a good LA mover.

About LA Neighborhood

LA is a big city, which has its arms wide open spread in 498.3 miles area. It welcomes everyone that comes in the city to embrace it. The city is divided in several neighborhoods, of which some are reasonably priced, while, others are quite posh. Harbor Area, The Eastside, the Westside, Northeast, South (referred as South Central by locals), Downtown, Crescenta Valleys, San Fernando, Wilshire, and Hollywood are different parts of the city representing different hues of the rich fabric of the city.

It has 3 world-class public universities – California State University, Northridge (CSUN), (California State University (CSULA), and University of California (UCLA) – and 20-30 community owned colleges. This is a wonderful place to live in. life here is always fun, but there is one downside to this happening city. It is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, which cause around 10,000 earthquakes every year. If you are not discouraged by this then read the following tips and follow them religiously when you go out shopping for a moving company in Los Angeles.

7 tip for hiring Los Angeles movers

Make sure that the driver and relocation crew sent by the moving company is aware of the Los Angeles neighborhood and its traffic laws. It is a big city; it has a total area of 498.3 square miles which is divided into 10 neighborhoods. An extensive knowledge of this city is important to avoid moving hiccups.

The city is full of fraudulent movers; therefore, before hiring a moving company, you need to check the required documents and permits to insure the safe arrival of all your belongings in the city. It will also tell you if the moving company has permission to relocate you to LA or not.

Make sure your stuffs are sent using a truck that has GPS connected to it. This will help you in tracking the location of the vehicle, and it will help the driver in pinpointing the location the truck has to go. It is necessary because Angelenos (resident of Los Angeles) are not very famous for stopping to tell direction.

Seeking recommendation from friends or friends of friends living in Los Angeles on this particular issue is as valuable as recommendations on which movie to watch, or which book to read. People living in Los Angeles will any day have better idea about the local moving services than people living outside of LA.

Do not depend upon just one mover. Prepare a contingency plan, and keep 2 or 3 LA movers in loop; things may go wrong at the eleventh hour.

Ask for the insurance coverage in case anything gets broken. Go with the one that offers maximum coverage at minimum effort, in case of damage.

Check if the crew member knows Spanish or not. More often than not, they will bump into Spanish speaking individuals in the city; even most of the printed materials and signboards are written in Spanish, in fact they are bilingual. The knowledge will help them reach your new place.

If you are moving to Los Angeles then you should know that the timing here is very important; when your stuffs will reach your new place will depend upon when it enters the city. Any vehicle hitting the city road during rush hours (7 to 10 AM & 3 to 7 PM) is bound get delayed. You should discuss this and similar issues with all the Los Angeles Movers you have shortlisted before you hire any of them.

Moving to Los Angeles (LA) is a dream many people cherish, but not everyone can fulfill this desire. You should feel lucky to get this opportunity to become a part of this happening city. But in order to survive here, you will have to adapt to the idiosyncrasy of the city, and this Los Angeles moving tips guide will help you in that. It also teaches you how to find a right Los Angeles moving service.

Los Angeles moving tips

Make yourself familiar with the surroundings (the city is divided into 10 neighborhoods), climate (it has Mediterranean climate), people (many live in their cars, and wears open-toed shoes in the winter), traffic situation (7-10 AM and 3-7PM are the busiest time of the day), etc., before you move in to the city.

Learn Spanish. Spanish is a major language here as the life here is heavily influenced by the Mexican culture. The packaged goods, trash cans, and even restaurant menus are bilingual here. Not only that, one-third of the radio stations plays Spanish music. Being bilingual with Spanish also helps in getting job in this part of the country.

If you are bringing your car in city which was not sold in California then you will have to pay more than $300 to the city as Smog impact fee. If you bought your ride in California then this charge will not be levied on you, as your car already follows the California emission guidelines.

Keep a Thomas Guide handy. It doesn’t matter if you have GPS or not, this one is must for making your way through the city.

Do not move nonessential items with you. They will be more of a hassle then convenience.

How to hire a Los Angeles moving service

If you were jittery about moving to Los Angeles then you must have gathered confidence after reading the moving tips I wrote above. Now, it is time to remove the anxiety related to finding a good moving service.

Make a list of movers available in the week you have planned to move.

Call each one of them and ask for their rates.

Strike out those who are out of your budget.

Prepare a new list comprising of the Los Angeles movers who is willing to serve you in the chosen week and within your budget.

Run a background check to see the past record of the mover. Is the record clean or has the company got lots of bad reviews because of the bad moving experience it gave to its past clients.

To avoid any fraudulent LA mover, make sure to verify the company’s legal status, and whether it has required permits to move people in and out of the city.

Conduct a reputation search of the company you want to use for moving to Los Angeles.

Ask if the truck has GPS attached to it for tracking or not. Also ask if the driver knows the route.

Ask the mover about the insurance coverage of the goods, in case it gets damaged.

Can the service provider be sued in the Californian court of law? You do not want to do that, but if things go wrong, you may have to do that.

If you follow the suggestions given above, moving to Los Angeles will be fun, which may not be so, if you decide to overlook the advice.

Moving to Los Angeles (LA) sounds exciting to most of the people because LA is the city of dreams where many have made it. But for every “who has made it” person there are countless “who never made it” people, so you should be cautious when deciding to relocate to this huge city with 4 million people and 498.3 square miles ground area.

Moving to Los Angeles is not difficult as there are many Los Angeles Moving Companies serving the needs of people moving in and out of the city, but before you book any of the Los Angeles Movers to relocate to the city, you should consider the following LA moving tips.

LA Moving Tips

Do not travel around the city during rush hours, which is 7 to 10 AM and 3 through 7 PM.

Ask the property owner or the realtor, if there is back-lane access to the building in the urban area for unloading the truck.

Before moving to LA, accustom yourself with the oddities and idiosyncrasy of the city. Many get baffled by the “living in car” lifestyle of LA, by people wearing open-toed shoes in winter, and by personalized license plates, etc. Hence, first experience the city then decide.

Visit the city before you move to LA. Do not go just by what you see in TV soaps. It is not always sunny in LA. You will face cold and rainy as well as dry and hot days in the city. LA has a Mediterranean climate.

As not everyone can make it here, so you should have contingency plan B and plan C in place. No one likes a broke aspirant here. You need to have thick skin to survive here.

Check the air quality and see if it is breathable for you or not. LA doesn’t suit everyone, and air quality is not very good.

Visit the city before you move in to see which neighborhood you want to live in. The city is divided into the following neighborhoods: Downtown LA, South (referred as South Central by locals), Crescenta Valleys, The Eastside, San Fernando, Northeast, Harbor Area, Wilshire, The Westside, and Hollywood.

Properly pack the essential items because finding things in a city where you will not know anyone is going to be difficult.

Do not move non-essential items with you, it will create unnecessary hassle.

Keep a GPS device handy. It will help you locate things in the neighborhood.

Buy a Thomas Guide. It predates GPS, and Google and yahoo Maps. This is essential to find your way through the sprawling landscape of the LA neighborhood.

If on one hand, the city has shopping centers like Hollywood and Highland complex, Robertson Boulevard, Melrose Avenue, the Beverly Center, Rodeo Drive, etc., then on the other hand it also has Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum at the University of California, Los Angeles, the Huntington Library art collection and botanical gardens, the Norton Simon Museum, and the J. Paul Getty Museum, etc.

There are many live entertainment centers and sports center as well. The City of Angeles (as LA is commonly known) offers one thing or other to everyone, thus your decision to moving to Los Angeles’ neighborhood should be governed by the kind of lifestyle you have. All the Los Angeles Moving Companies do have such information handy, and many among them will be quite willingly help you choose the right location in the city, so seek their help.

I hope this LA moving tips will help you a great deal in moving to Los Angeles.

Los Angeles is the city of dreams, aspiration, perspiration, failure, and success. It is the largest city in California, and the second largest city in the United States. It spans over 498.3 square miles and is home for around 4 million people.

Depending upon what you think, living in such a place can be luxury or a drag, and if you are newly shifted resident then it also depends upon how you have been shifted to this city. If your Los Angeles moving services made the shifting to the city effortless then the city may looks more beautiful, but if the LA movers you chose just sucked money and broke your stuffs then this bad experience of the city will sour your experience for a initial few days. This is plain-Jane human psychology therefore you should be extra careful when choosing a moving service.

How to choose a Los Angeles mover

There are many Los Angeles moving services that do not have proper license, and do not give adequate guarantee for the stuffs that they move. You should look for the following things when finalizing any moving services provider.

LA movers checklist

* Have you done sufficient research to find out the Los Angeles moving company?
* Is the company you are hiring reliable enough?
* For how long is the company in business?
* Does it have all the required licenses to operate in LA and in the state from where you are moving?
* How much insurance coverage does it offer?
* Do the fleet have GPS device installed for anytime tracking.
* Can they give some reference?

Benefit of moving to the City of Angels

If you are the kind who believe in living his life to the fullest then The City of Angel is not going to disappoint you. As said above, LA is the city of dream, and life here is luxurious. The life in the city is very much governed by Hollywood. The presence of Hollywood has deemed the city as the entertainment capital of the world. Apart from Hollywood, for which it is commonly known, the city is also home to business, culture, entertainment, media, international trade, science, technology, fashion, and education.

LA neighborhood

LA is a big city sprawling across 498.3 miles. The city has been divided into several neighborhoods. Some of them are quite plush while others are reasonably priced. The city is divided into following neighborhoods: Hollywood, Downtown, Harbor Area, The Eastside, Northeast, South (referred as South Central by locals), the Westside, San Fernando, Crescenta Valleys, and Wilshire.

Schools

Los Angeles Unified School District manages most of the schools in the city with a total student capacity of around 100,000. It’s the largest public school system in California.

Colleges and university

If you are shifting to LA, you also need to know about the colleges and the universities in the neighborhood. There are three public universities in the city. Those are Los Angeles Campus of: University of California (UCLA), California State University (CSULA), and California State University, Northridge (CSUN). And there are around 20-30 private and community owned colleges which include Alliant International University, American Film Institute Conservatory, American InterContinental University, etc.

Caveats against shifting

Before you use your Los Angeles moving services to shift your home to the city, you should know that the city is susceptible to earthquakes because it is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Around 10,000 earthquakes are produced every year due to the fault lines above and below the ground caused by geological instability.

Conclusion

Keep the things discussed above in mind while moving to LA, and also verify the LA movers against the Los Angeles moving services checklist discussed above. This will give you a peaceful mind while moving to this city, The City of Angels.

Don't stress out about your move - here are some easy planning strategies to remove the headaches!

Moving is no fun. Planning, packing, looking for the right moving company – there are so many things to take care of that it is no wonder that most of us are nervous wrecks by moving day! I have moved several times, including overseas, over the past few years, and I can tell you – moving isn’t ever fun, but it can be smooth and relatively stress-free.

What you need is a plan for moving day. Regardless of how the planning and packing process has gone so far (I hope it has gone well!), there are some simple things you can right before or on moving day to make your move smoother.

1. Take Stock
Make a list of all separate items. Categorize them by type: boxes, furniture, even big bags or bedding in its original packing.

2. Organize your boxes
Organize your boxes by keeping fragile and non-fragile items separetly. Keep the boxes containing essential items clearly labeled and on hand. You can also label each box with the specific location or room you want it delivered to. If you want to hide your valuables in some innocuously labeled box, make sure you remember which one.

3. Work with your movers
Be present for the movers, both while loading and unloading. Cross-check the movers’ inventory with your own list. Check the moving company’s license, and make sure you give them the right address for delivery. A good moving company will help you as much as you let them. So make their work more efficient by giving them clear directions and making sure you are accessible to them by cell phone.

4. Last-minute checks
Make sure that all supplies and switches are turned off, the windows and doors shut, and that you have all the important documents pertaining to your move.

5. Ready the other side
Reserve a parking space as close as possible to your new entrance. If you need to pick up keys, give yourself time to do that. Have plastic sheets ready to protect the floor from any damage from furniture or boots.

6. Be Prepared
This is one of those things that anyone who’s “been there” will tell you. But how exactly should you go about it? Let me suggest a little technique I like to call “negative visualization”. It is best to do this together with other adults who may be moving with you (spouse, parents, friends). That way you can keep it fun and cover more ground.

Here is how you do it: the day before your move, sit down with a sheet of paper. Now imagine moving day, from start to finish. Picture all the possible things that can go wrong in this scenario. Is it raining? Did you find a whole bottom drawer still in need of packing? Make notes of those possibilities and prepare for them: get more boxes; arrange shrink wrap for rain, etc.

It sounds a little quirky, but it works because most of us imagine worst-case scenarios all the time anyway. The only difference is that we usually relegate such thoughts to the back of our minds, where they turn into vague anxieties and lead to stress. By dealing with them properly you will considerably decrease your chances of running into ‘unforeseen circumstances’.

Preparing in this way will ensure that you wake up on moving day with a feeling of control. And it will go a long way in eliminating stress from your whole day, not just for you but for everyone around you.

Moving can have a huge impact on your ecological footprint – all those boxes and tape and packing paper that end up in the trash. Trying to move while being aware of how to limit your contribution to waste does take a little extra planning and preparation; in the end, it can save you money and will definitely make you feel better that you’ve helped the environment – a win-win situation for everyone!

Earth-friendlier Packing Materials
Packing materials can be the major contributor to your impact, and at the same time, they are necessary to get the job done. Here are a few solutions to help you move a little greener when it comes to packing materials:

    * Reusable containers: For our last move, my husband and I recruited family and friends to let us borrow plastic containers they might have. We weren’t able to pack everything we owned in reusable containers, but we were able to reduce the number of boxes we needed. Remember, boxes also require tape – something that can’t be recycled and which takes a very long time to decompose.

For our next move, I plan on purchasing plastic containers that can be easily stacked and stored, so they’re always on hand for when the moving-bug starts to bite. If you move often, this might also be a good solution for you as it not only saves trees and waste, but it also saves you time in finding enough packing boxes.

If you live in the Long Beach/Orange County area of California, there’s a great new company on the rise called Earth Friendly Moving – a company dedicated to creating greener moves. Their services include the dropping-off of plastic, reusable containers for a very small fee, then picking them up again after your move is complete. Let’s hope this kind of services catches on and goes global – I’d love not to have to stress about getting boxes and tape and worrying that the bottoms will hold. Currently, Earth Friendly Moving is looking at expanding to the rest of Southern California, so if you live in the area check out their website.

    * Recycled Materials: A great way to save money and your impact on the earth is to collect used boxes from grocery stores, wine and liquor stores and other retail outlets. We do this often, especially for lighter weight and less fragile items, where the strength of the box isn’t a determining factor. And no one can deny the usefulness of wine/liquor boxes; most have the cell packs already installed which makes packing glasses, bottles and other fragiles really simple and easy. In addition, most of these boxes are re-enforced to withstand heavier loads. I highly recommend asking your neighborhood beverage outlet for their empty boxes. Just make sure you ask in advance of your move and also what day they normally receive their shipments and when the best time to drop by would be.

    * Online Sources for Used Materials: the online networks are a great source for finding used packing goods at a good price. Craigslist is the first and most extensive place to shop and meet like-minded individuals who may want to swap or give-away used boxes. If you can’t find any listings for your area, post your own request.

Getting Rid of Stuff

    * Donate Your Stuff: Before you throw an unwanted item in the trash, think about donating it to a local charity or even a neighbor who might find it valuable. Just make sure that what you’re donating can be used by someone. Most thrift stores and non-profit societies cannot use ripped clothing or items that are so worn that no one else would want it. Be thoughtful before you unload your stuff at a local charity.

    * Do your research: Find out what the non-profit is looking for or if you have specific items, such as cat kennels (in our case), call a non-profit that specializes in a particular cause to see if they’d want the items (for cat kennels, we’d call a local animal shelter or rescue society). There are many organizations out there that also set-up homes for youth or single mothers which might take larger items from you. Again, research the options, then decide where you’d like to donate. Remember, electronics can also be donated, recycled and are greatly appreciated.

    * Sell Your Stuff: If you think your things are sellable, that someone else might find them to be treasures, not trash, then you can also try to sell them online through companies such as eBay. If you’re thinking more small-scale or you don’t want to bother with shipping items to buyers, then you could also host a garage sale or place an ad in a local neighborhood newspaper advertising the items.

How to Offset Your Impact

    * Purchase Carbon Offsets: If you’re hiring a company or moving yourself, find out if the moving or rental company has a “green” mantra or if they are a carbon-neutral company. Many movers and rental agencies are not, and many people don’t have the option of hiring companies who are, simply because they don’t exist in the local area. This is beginning to change, however, as more customers demand alternative options. My recommendation is to ask. It certainly doesn’t hurt and it might even stimulate thoughts around creating a greener move.

Regardless of whether your mover is green or not, you can help lower the impact of your move, in particular the gas emissions the truck will burn, by purchasing carbon offsets. We do this not only for the truck emissions, but also for our travel costs to the new home (car or plane emissions).

To find out what your emission rate would be for the US go to Bonneville Environmental Foundation, for Canada, go to Planetair, and if you’re in Europe, check out MyClimate.

In the end, if you’re planning on moving, the best course of action to follow for a greener move is to the best you can. Not all of us have the resources available to make a perfectly carbon neutral move. However, just being aware of your impact is a really good start in helping the planet.

How to get the write moving company can be tricky. Make sure you understand how to get a quote that won't skyrocket on you at the last minute. Some moving companies are notorious for this bait and switch practice. Here is how to get it done right:

Before hiring a moving company, it is wise to get at least three to four quotes. A moving quote is an estimate that provided by a company that will tell you what your job will cost. Acquiring a moving quote will give you key pieces of information about the credibility of a company, not just help plan the moving budget. Before shopping for estimates, however, be aware of the following four important factors about the nature of the quote and how they relate to the moving companies that provide them.

Is it Binding and Non-Binding?

Binding quotes are those that are legal contracts and cannot be changed unless extra services are added. Binding quotes almost always involve a representative coming to your home for a visual inspection of the home contents. This type of estimate that is set in writing is legally binding. As such, you are guaranteed to pay the rate you are quoted unless other services are negotiated.

Non-binding moving quotes are not considered legal contracts and do not have to be honored by the service provider. Typically, the moving service operator does not pay a visit to the home for a visual inspection, and sometimes the quote is low and designed to bait a prospective customer with a low price. In many cases with non-binding moving quotes, customers of these companies end up paying far more than the quoted price.

Be as careful with low moving quotes as much as the high quotes. If you don’t want any surprises, get your quote in writing and make it a binding quote.

The Bait and Switch

If a quote is far lower than the average quote, and it is provided strictly over the phone, it may be a “low ball” quote designed to get a commitment from the buyer. Or, perhaps it is a great deal. In the case of an abnormally low moving quote, get it in writing. Federal agencies fine hundreds of moving companies every year for bad business practices. Many victims have reported companies that will offer you very low moving estimate and then raise price up by more than double before your goods are delivered. In some, more egregious cases, the moving company puts the furniture in the truck and then hits the customer with double or triple the cost of the original estimate.

Check the Service Inclusions

When a binding quote is acquired, it is important to review the specific services that are included in the move. Estimates that might seem high could include additional services that are valuable but not specifically listed in the moving quote. Try to ask as many questions as possible about your moving quotes and request maximum details from your prospective movers. In some cases, moving company operators fail to disclose all of the additional services they will provide. Also, you may not want all the packing services that the moving company assumes you will need. For example, perhaps you want to pack a good portion of your personal belongings. By doing this work, you can shave down your cost and moving quote.
Communication and Common Sense

When seeking a quote from a professional moving company, do not underestimate your moving needs. If your garage is filled with three tons of miscellaneous books, then it will be an important factor in the cost of moving. Use good communication and common sense when contracting with a Los Angeles moving provider. Moving is not something we do every day, it is expensive, and very stressful. By paying attention to detail when hiring a moving company, everybody wins, and your move can will be far less stressful than it already is.
